Hey Gardeners, would it be OK to use red cedar mulch around my tomato plants?

I'm thinking not. Would it be all right to put the red cedar a foot away from the plants? The reason why I ask is I also have flowers planted in the same area. What else can I use for mulch other then pine needles? Thanks

ceder is poisonous in the garden, use grass clipping instead
Reply:As far as I know, cedar mulch should be fine for the tomato plants. But, straw is a good mulch for any veggie garden. =)

Reply:Why pay for mulch? Just use dry or rotted leaf mulch. Your neighbors probably bag and put it out to the street. Just dont do it to soon. The ground needs to warm up to help the tomatoe plants thrive. Too soon and the mulch will insulate the ground and keep it too cool.
