Squash attack! My Bell pepper and tomato plants are getting engulfed. Can I trim back the zucchini vines?

I planted the squash seeds 5 ft from my other plants, but they seem to be taking over the end of my veggie rows. I've got an eggplant, bell pepper and tomato almost covered in zuchinni and yellow squash leaves. Is there a way to train the vines to grow over each other instead? Can I cut the runners as they near the other plants? Will letting them grow around and over the other plants hurt the other veggies? My neighbors are thrilled with all the squash, but we're looking forward to the others as well.

If you have the room I would train them to grow in the oppsite direction by moving the vines even if they have already grown little roots into the ground, this willnot kill them and they will grow new little roots where you want them. If you do not have the space then you are going to need to trellis them. I have encountered the same problem in the past and I now only buy the bush varieties and they no longer try and take over my garden. Good Luck!
Reply:just move the vines into the area you want them to grow. I made "steps" out of 2x4's for my vines to rest on that way I could grow twice as many in a smaller area.

Good Luck!
Reply:I would trellis the vines and train them to grow up.
Reply:If you try to trim the vines, they will die. I have used flexible plastic netting stapled to 2 x 4 wood and attached the vines with strips cut from pantyhose to grow them vertically. You can find the netting at one of the chain home stores. It is fairly inexpensive, and you can reuse every year.
Reply:I too have had squash plants take over a garden. I think if you follow the intruding vine back to its source and cut it off there it should solve the problem. You'll still have some squash but you can also enjoy your other veggies when they ripen. If you're like us, we get too much squash too quick anyway.
