the weather has been very dry. the beefsteak tomatoes i grew from seeds. the other tomato plants i bought.
My beefsteak tomato plants make blooms but no tomatoes. other varieties make blooms and tomatoes in same garde
Could be enough water for the plant , but not the fruit. Try a little extra water . Beefsteak types are later varieties , might not be time yet .
Are they all together ? Is there any reason why they wouldn't be getting pollinated, while the others are ? On the upwind side of the group ? Further away from flowers that draw pollinators ? A less breezy location? Less likely reason for the problem, but a possibility .
ps . book %26amp; zymo : Epsom salts is a commonly used fertilizer , mixed with other things, such as alfalfa meal .. It has potassium , so is good , esp for fruit %26amp; flowers, but in SMALL doses . ( 1- TBS / plant / season, at most) well-scattered around it
pps "..Pinch off the new suckers or (new leaves) as they come on. This will give the food to the blooms on the plants.. . "
I've always heard that , but it makes no sense . The leaves you pinch off are making food for the plant . Maybe if you pinch off the fruit on the suckers , it might help the other tomatos, but not the leaves . I never do it , %26amp; the tomato plants are usually over my head, %26amp; loaded . Maybe that was the original purpose? To keep the plants shorter by stunting them slightly ?
Reply:You can get a product called Spray-set that will chemically "set" the tomatoes. You might also get a soft paintbrush and move pollen from one plant to another by hand. It's hard to get tomatoes to set fruit in very hot weather, and these have worked for me in the past.
Reply:keep your plants watered even if it is dry.
afford some plant room to grow. Pinch off the new suckers or (new leaves) as they come on. This will give the food to the blooms on the plants.
Get some tomato food plant steaks that slow feeds the plant to give it the right amount of food after you place it into the ground around the outside parameters of the root system. Pinch off a few of the blooms and see if there is a few blooms on your plant that start grownin' on there %26amp; watch them grow.
Reply:The flowers should turn into the fruit so just be patient and don't put salt on your plants that guy is trying to sabotage you.
Reply:Try Epsom salt on them, first mix the Epsom salt in water and then pour it on the tomato roots just like you water them already. Tomato's love Epsom salt .(so does tobacco plants)
Reply:Got to remember to fertilize the plants and water them. they need to stay moist I think
Reply:Beefsteak tomatos do not like dry conditions, that is when they do not do well in western states. They best you can do is to mulch well, water well, fertilze with a low nitrogen feed and hope for the best.
Good Luck,
-Doug
Reply:The plants may be all male plants(no female)
